The R.G. Myers Memorial Lecture is an annual public lecture sponsored by Monash University and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (Victoria) to commemorate the outstanding service rendered by the late Dr. Robert Myers.
A forensic psychiatrist who was actively engaged in medico-legal practice, research and teaching, Dr. Myers was Foundation President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law, an association which has succeeded in bringing together members of the various disciplines with an interest in the biopsychosocial aspects of the legal system..
Terry Carney LL.B.(Hons), Dip. Crim. (Melb), Ph.D.(Mon)
is Professor of Law and Director of Research at the University of Sydney. The Immediate Past President of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, he chaired Commonwealth bodies such as the National Advisory Council on Social Welfare and the Board of the Institute of Family Studies, along with various State enquiries on child welfare, adult guardianship and health law. The author of nearly a dozen books/monographs and over a hundred academic papers, his most recent books include Managing Anorexia Nervosa: Clinical, Legal & Social Perspectives on Involuntary Treatment (New York: Nova Science, 2006); and Social Security Law and Policy (Sydney: Federation Press, 2006).

Dr Robert (Bob) Adler
Bob Adler graduated from the University of Sydney in
1969 and completed his training in psychiatry and
child psychiatry at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in
Sydney.
Between 1977 and 1984 he held appointments as a
Staff Psychiatrist in the Department of Child and
Family Psychiatry at RAHC and then as Senior
Lecturer in Child Psychiatry in the Faculty of
Medicine at the University of Newcastle, where he
completed his PhD.
He was Chairman of the Royal Children s Hospital,
Mental Health Service, and Professor/Director of
Child and Family Psychiatry in the Departments of
Paediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of
Melbourne from 1985 to 1998.
He is currently a psychiatrist at the Adolescent
Forensic Health Service at the Melbourne Juvenile
Justice Centre, President of the Medical Practitioners
Board of Victoria, and has a part-time private
practice with an interest in the forensic aspects of
child and adolescent psychiatry, particularly in
relation to child protection and child welfare in both
the Family Court and Children s Courts.
